Spiral (2021) (Jigsaw Spinoff)

In Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger write and direct Darren Lynn Bousman's 2021 horror thriller. In the eighth film in the Saw series. Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson feature in the thriller, which chronicles police attempts to arrest a Jigsaw copycat murderer. As executive producers are James Wan and Leigh Whannell, together with Rock and Kevin Greutert, from the first series.

Chris Rock's desire to push out into the horror genre prompted rumors of a new Saw movie after the 2017 release of Jigsaw. The directors of Jigsaw, the Spierig Brothers, were interested in directing another film, but ultimately opted against it. Rock is polishing a screenplay by Stolberg and Goldfinger, which was revealed publicly in May of 2019. The remainder of the ensemble arrived in July, and production continued through August in Toronto.

Lionsgate pushed the cinema release of Spiral: From the Book of Saw back to May 14, 2021 in the United States because to the COVID-19 pandemic, even though the film had been slated to be released in May 2020. Critics were split on whether or not the film was successful in reimagining the series entirely; although they complimented the franchise's new direction, they were divided on whether or not the film was successful in reimagining the franchise.

What exactly happens in the movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw?

Off-duty Detective Marv Bozwick pursues a criminal into a sewage pipe during a July 4 celebration. Attacked from behind by a pig mask, Bozwick wakes to find himself dangling by his tongue in a subway tunnel. He is offered an option through recorded message: rip out his tongue and survive, or wait until the next train comes, murdering him. Unable to escape the trap, Bozwick is murdered by the train. The following day, Captain Angie Garza sends Detective Zeke Banks an optimistic rookie. Banks and Schenk analyze Bozwick's death, and Banks thinks it's identical to the Jigsaw Killer's.

A murder investigator called Fitch, who rejected a backup call from Banks and almost died, is taken and put in a trap where he must pull off his fingers to prevent electrocution; he also dies. Banks' experience with Fitch leads several cops to mistrust him. A package comes with a pig puppet and Schenk's tattooed flesh inside. A little vial inside the box leads detectives to a butcher shop that Banks and his father, former chief Marcus Banks, frequented. On arrival, the squad finds a recording recorder and Schenk's skinned body. Marcus tracks down the murderer himself and gets snatched from a factory. Soon later, Garza is abducted and put in a trap in the precinct's cold storage where she must cut her spinal chord to stop hot wax from pouring down her face. Banks finds her corpse after she dies from injuries caused by the hot wax.

During the chase, Banks is caught and wakes up in a warehouse chained to a pipe with a hacksaw nearby. He contemplates cutting off his arm, but manages to get away with a bobby pin. Peter Dunleavy, Dunleavy's ex-partner who was sacked and imprisoned when Banks uncovered a murder he committed, is tied to a chair. Glass shrapnel is being hurled at him from a massive glass-crushing machine that has been adapted to do so. It's recorded on a recording that Banks has the option of either freeing or killing the prisoner. Despite his best efforts, Banks is unable to free Dunleavy in time. There, Banks discovers Schenk, who has been a copycat all along, having faked his own death by using a skinned body of an accomplice who enticed Bozwick into a tunnel. It was Charlie Emmerson, who was shot and murdered by Dunleavy because he had promised to testify against a crooked officer, that his son's last name is indeed Emmerson, the son of Charlie Emmerson. He also indicates that Marcus, when serving as chief, sheltered corrupt cops on purpose in order to more effectively clean the streets under Article 8.

Emmerson, believing that Banks may be an ally, administers a last test, displaying Marcus restrained in the air and slowly being drained of blood. Emmerson dials 9-1-1 and pretends to be a civilian being chased by a gunman, prompting the operator to deploy a SWAT squad to his position. He provides Banks a handgun with one cartridge and gives him the option of shooting a target that would rescue Marcus but enable Emmerson to escape, or killing Emmerson and letting Marcus bleed to death. To rescue his father, Banks fires the target, forcing his shackles to loosen and dropping him to the ground, and then starts fighting Emmerson. Shortly later, the SWAT squad comes and accidentally trips a tripwire, forcing Marcus' handcuffs to tug him upward once again. Marcus' arm displays a pistol, prompting the SWAT squad to mistake him for the gunman and murder him. Banks shouts in sorrow as Emmerson flees.

When Billy the Puppet's origins were discussed, Bell indicated an interest in returning as Jigsaw.

Chris Rock's Spiral (2021)

Chris Rock contacted Lionsgate with his Spiral proposal in order to revitalize the Saw series and his own career.

According to Chris Rock, the idea for Spiral came from a chance meeting with Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns at a friend's wedding in Brazil, and he thought doing something in the horror genre would be a new direction for him to go in his career, though he planned to include some comedic elements in the film. When Rock contacted Lionsgate with his plans to expand the brand, they were immediately intrigued. Rock's approach, according to Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake, was entirely respectful of the material's past while reinvigorating the brand with his humor, artistic vision, and enthusiasm for this legendary horror property. According to industry reports, Lionsgate has began talks for a ninth Saw film in January 2018, however the Spierig Brothers would not be returning. In an interview with Screen Rant, the filmmakers revealed that their picture established the groundwork for potential sequels. Twisted Pictures was working on a sequel with Jigsaw authors Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger by April 2018.

After Jigsaw, Stolberg and Goldfinger pitched a new Saw film based only on John Kramer / Jigsaw to series veterans Mark Burg and Oren Koules, but Burg and Koules phoned the pair to advise them of Rock's plans for a new film, with Rock calling them soon after to explore his notion. Before Rock, several writers presented their ideas for the next Saw film to Lionsgate, but none of them succeeded. Stolberg and Goldfinger came up with eight versions of the picture before Rock fused his concept with theirs. Burg and Koules told them to throw Rock. Stolberg and Goldfinger's idea was accepted by Lionsgate and Rock, and their first draft was greenlit a week later. Rock rewrote Stolberg and Goldfinger's tale as needed.

Rock's persona was originally based on Danny Glover's David Tapp from the previous film. Since this path did not pass the smell test, Stolberg and Goldfinger chose not to travel down it. By the end of May 2021, it was reported by Bousman that Costas Mandylor had been approached about reprising his role as Mark Hoffman in a future film. They debated bringing back Tobin Bell as Jigsaw until the very last day of production because they thought it would make the movie seem more like a sequel than a stand-alone movie. As Jigsaw was killed off in the third picture, Bousman believed that previous films had done a disservice by utilizing flashbacks to reintroduce Jigsaw into the tale and he did not want to make the same error in Spiral (2021) or disrespect Bell's legendary portrayal. Bell was considered for inclusion in Spiral: From the Book of Saw, but Bousman discarded the concept because he felt it was too gimmicky..

Tobin Bell missed Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021).

Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is the first Saw film without Tobin Bell as Jigsaw.

Despite discussions taking place after the first test screening and throughout post-production, Stolberg stated in an interview with Bloody Disgusting that Jigsaw was never included in any drafts for the screenplay of Spiral (2021) because they felt that including Jigsaw would change the foundation of the story they were trying to achieve, not to diminish the character but to move the franchise in a new direction. Stolberg also believed that, given the franchise's timeline, any possible connection John Kramer might have had with William Schenk / The Spiral (2021) Killer should have occurred when the latter was still a child, given his portrayer's age; Stolberg and Goldfinger proposed at one point to have an after-credits sequence in which Kramer met a young Schenk after the murder of the latter's father and bonded with him, possibly giving him the puppet he later uses as the S

This new Jigsaw copycat is different from the original in appearance, so it was decided to use a new puppet called Mr. Snuggles to replace Billy the Puppet. Bousman felt that if the original Jigsaw was changed, then a different puppet should also be used to ensure that the killer could not possibly be comparable. The production feared that reusing Bell's voice for Mr. Snuggles could have created questions about the relationship between both killers; an early draft actually featured Jigsaw's voice, only to then be revealed a digitally altered version of his voice and the story originally had all the speeches as actually being past recordings of Jigsaw's voice using words in a different order to show that the Spiral (2021) Killer had digitally rearranged the words. When they couldn't come up with a replacement for Bell's voice, the filmmakers had a difficult time locating one. There were several other human voices that Bousman tried before deciding on the computer-simulated one. Only two days before the sound mix was completed, the final voice was chosen for the picture.

Spiral Behind the Scenes

The film began pre-production on May 16, 2019. Darren Lynn Bousman, a former series director, will direct the picture, with Burg and Koules serving as producers. Rock served as executive producer and wrote the narrative treatment.

James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Daniel Heffner, the original creators of Saw, have joined Rock as executive producers. As scriptwriters, Stolberg and Goldfinger were confirmed.

Rock mentioned that he has been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. He was ecstatic at the prospect of taking things to a new level of intensity and twistedness.

Bousman didn't want to direct another Saw movie after Saw IV, so when Rock asked him to direct a Broadway show in New York City, he said no.

Burg and Koules stated Rock's Saw treatment was like Eddie Murphy's in 48 Hrs., giving the series a unique viewpoint. Bousman said that compared to previous entries, Spiral (2021) has less violence and gore. He said that gore and violence were his gimmick when he began working on the Saw films, but that these components now serve the plot, which focuses more on character, suspense, and terror.

Stolberg also clarified that the ninth episode will be a part of the same canon as the previous eight films, and that it would neither be a reboot or a straight sequel to Jigsaw.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw roles

Rock has a starring role in the show as Detective Zeke Banks. Rock, Stolberg, and Goldfinger had conversations prior to writing the screenplay that led to the creation of the character. During these conversations, Rock was thinking about what he would do if he were the original Saw protagonist, Dr. Lawrence Gordon, and was forced to cut off his own foot. Eventually, the three of them came to the conclusion that it would be more interesting if Rock played a cop who was shunned by his fellow officers.

Samuel L. Jackson decided to portray Chief Marcus Banks because he wanted to experience something new, such as the climax sequence in which his character is hung up like a marionette. Despite being a Saw fan, Marisol Nichols preferred to view David Fincher's Seven instead of the other films in preparation for the part. Patrick McManus auditioned for the part of Detective Marv Bozwick, but was called back to portray Peter Dunleavy, while Dan Petronijevic was cast as Bozwick, in an effort to pursue an acting career on film and television after years of playing on stage.

Max Minghella took on the part of William Schenk / The Spiral: From the Book of Saw Killer because he desired to feature in a picture with straightforward story-telling like the buddy cops of his childhood like 48 Hrs., and when he read the screenplay, he believed it was that, coupled with a Saw film.

What was it like filming Spiral?

Principal filming for The Organ Donor started on July 8, 2019, in Toronto, Ontario, with Jordan Oram acting as cinematographer. The film will feature Rock, Jackson, Minghella, and Nichols. According to Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock, as well as Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols, will make this picture wholly unique in the Saw canon, and they can't wait to unleash this surprising and scary new narrative on fans of the series. This was Saw at its most extreme. On site, Rock contributed rewrites and entirely rewrote his character's introductory sequence. According to Bousman, a sequence with a trap had to be deleted from the movie because it was too gruesome.

Filming was officially completed on August 28, 2019. Dev Singh edited the final cut during post-production.

What did reviewers think of the movie "Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)"?

Spiral: From the Book of Saw's efforts to shake up the series formula were lauded by reviewers, but it fell short of giving Saw the huge push it needed to reclaim its relevancy.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 37% of 221 reviewer reviews are favorable, with a 5.1/10 average. The site's critical consensus was that Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) reveals a new path for the Saw series, even if the gruesome whole is less than its pieces.

According to Metacritic, which uses a weighted average of 33 reviewers, the film received a score of 40 out of 100.

Filmgoers surveyed by CinemaScore awarded it a B- on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak found that 63% of those interviewed thought it was a good movie, with 43% indicating they'd suggest it to others.

According to one reviewer, the film has an unexpected twist or two, but given that it's a thriller about police immorality, it approaches the subject in an oddly offtopic, even garishly generic manner.

Another film reviewer said the writing maintained the grizzled-cop-movie tone and drew some interesting characters, but the plot was repetitive, the mystery was annoyingly foreseeable, and the inventive deaths were less imaginative than before. Spiral: From the Book of Saw compromised entertainment value for respectability and failed to accomplish either.

Many film reviews praised Spiral (2021) as a really terrifying, albeit unevenly paced, detective thriller, while simultaneously criticizing its writing for failing to depict the potential tensions between its major characters' father-son relationship.

Some movie critics liked the acting and the simple but interesting premise of Spiral. However, they said that the voice of the mysterious killer sounded like Kermit the Frog, and they said that this movie's real audience wouldn't be able to handle the screams and blood. They're the main attraction.

In a film critic's opinion, the film's finale was hurried, half-assed, and clumsily written, and worst of all, boring. Finally, he said that the game was finished.

Another reviewer awarded the picture a one-and-a-half star rating because of its tone and Darren Lynn Bousman's directing, which he stated disappointed him because of his love for the performers, and called it unreadable for its lack of tension, plotline, and plot advancement.

A different film critic liked the opening scene, but thought it was the only good part of the movie. To sum it up, he or she wrote that the movie's premise is, at best, dishonest and, at worst, meant to make people afraid. Like one of Jigsaw's easy puzzles, this movie isn't as smart as it thinks it is.

One critic gave the movie a 3 out of 10 and said that Spiral: From the Book of Saw is likely to turn off both Saw fans and people who don't know much about the series. It looks and sounds nothing like the series and can't even meet the most basic visual and story expectations. It's also a bad movie in general that tries to tell a story that is important to society but can't do it. He also said that the movie didn't have much to do with the Saw series. He said that Spiral: From the Book of Saw is barely a Saw movie because it only shows the visceral thrill of mutilation briefly and doesn't follow any of the other rules of the series. It's also the most boring and insensitive version of what it's supposed to be: a rejected pilot episode for a boring police procedural.

How Decker Shado sees Spiral. From the pages of the Book of Saw and the imagination of Chris Rock comes Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), the most recent installment in the Saw film series, which was released before the end of the year 2021. After we were treated to a full season of SAW, you should be familiar with the story's premise at this point: a serial murderer is on the run, but he doesn't kill his victims in the traditional sense; rather, he puts them through a series of inventive and unsettling mechanical ordeals. At the very least, that should be understood to be the notion. There is a lot of room for improvement with many of these catches... not only that, but the approach being taken is not exactly right, and neither is the end objective being pursued. The explanation is presented in a much more clear and concise manner in his video.

Another film reviewer said that it is not a waste of a premise. However, the franchise does not need reinvention. Rock's presence gives some fresh blood to Spiral, but after a promising start, the picture merely becomes a fairly average Saw movie with some larger stars than usual—one whose jaundiced lighting and procedural narrative more than anything evoke David Fincher's Se7en. Consider the game a failure if the goal was to determine whether a new perspective on a long-running property could withstand being cut and diced by the sequel machine.

A film critic gave the movie a bad review, saying that "Spiral: From the Book of Saw stumbles through its central mystery without grace, style, or even much thought." Even the death traps are strangely boring. He said that the movie had potential and that the most frustrating thing about Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is that there is a better, smarter movie hiding under all this nonsense. There are too many fast cuts and scenes that get faster and faster. It's annoying that bad dialogue is shouted at full volume. In the end, Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is a movie about corrupt and even murderous cops who are suddenly held accountable. This kind of material has the potential to be both subversive for a Hollywood movie and timely, but Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) seems to care so little about any of this that it's almost frustrating. Its only goal is to kill many people, which it does.

The sequel to Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) has yet to be announced.

Twisted Pictures confirmed in April 2021 that a sequel film, titled Saw X, was in the works. Bousman, on the other hand, stated that the announcement was made prematurely, which surprised him and the film's producers. He stated that just because they made Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) doesn't mean the Saw franchise is dead. Spiral: From the Book of Saw's arrival does not rule out Saw IX. This isn't the ninth installment in the Saw series. Jigsaw could easily be followed by Saw IX. I believe they are waiting to see how Spiral: From the Book of Saw performs and how audiences react before deciding what to do next. The script was finished in December of that year, according to Josh Stolberg.

Will Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) be adapted into a series for television at some point?

In an interview with Deadline Hollywood conducted in April 2021, the chairman of Lionsgate Television, Kevin Beggs, said that the company is in preliminary discussions to produce a television series based on Spiral (2021), in collaboration with Mark Burg and Oren Koules' Twisted Television productions.
